What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a type of Psychotherapy that uses art to enable the expression of feelings and thoughts of the client. In this process, the client is encouraged not only to talk about their emotions, but also to present them in a creative, symbolic object. With the help of the therapist, the Client might create a collage, a picture, a sculpture or a painting or drawing that represents their present state of mind. It is a practice that can be used to work with all types of populations, including children, teenagers, adults and seniors.

It is important to know that there is no need to be a talented artist or a skilled painter to be in Art Therapy!  Most important is that the use of materials aid the Client in their process and represent what is happening inside, even if it only means using blank piece of paper. There are no limits or “right or wrong” in this practice.

The therapeutical aspect of Art Therapy follows many different psychological theories, being able to work not only through psychoanalysis, but also through humanistic and behavioral practices. It really depends on the Therapist you are working with. Its flexible and noble nature makes it a very effective healing service, which can also be used as an adjunct therapy to psychiatric, medical and other  treatment methods.
